Racecourse Information for Ripon
Known as the Garden Racecourse — there is always a floral welcome for racegoers to this charming North Yorkshire racecourse. Ripon is home to the six-furlong Great St Wilfrid Handicap (named after the town’s Patron Saint) run in August. The track is a tight oval of I mile 5 furlongs with sharp bends and in shape it is not unlike Redcar. There is a dip about a furlong from the finish, which can unbalance tired horses. Mark Johnston trains nearby at Middleham and tends to send some of his leading lights here. Front runners have a distinct edge here on races over a mile to a mile and a half.
