The Racing Yorkshire Guide to Betting
Betting for the first time?
Here's a quick guide to on course betting:
The amount of money that you bet is known as a stake, you
can bet as little as a few pence to a very high amount in
the hundreds or even the thousands.
If you are a winner you will collect your winnings or your
returns depending the horses odds.
When you place a bet, you will notice that the horse the you
choose has what is known as a odds. The higher the odds the
more unlikely it is that the horse will be a winner. If the
horse is a winner at long odds you will stand to win a large
amount of money, dependent on your stake. However, if you
odds are short, then you stand to make only a little, as the
horse is thought to have a good chance of winning the race.
Prices can be odds against, evens, or odds on.
When a bookies offers an amount which is more than double
that amount of money that you placed on the bet for a win,
if you placed £10 at 2/1 and the horse came home first then
you will receive £20 plus your stake of £10 which would make
a total of £30.
When the bookies say that the amount is evens then your win
would be equal to double your stake - making a win of £10.
If the bookies say that the price is odds on then a win for
your £10 would give to £10 plus half your stake amount -
making a win of £15.
Types of UK tote Bets

Try a reverse toteexacta or a combination toteexacta to
increase your chances. This is obviously more difficult than

much greater

Pick the horses to finish 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the correct
order in a totetrifecta race. Get this right and you could
win big!
Minimum total spend £2.
This is racing’s favourite bet – and it couldn’t be simpler!
Just pick a horse to be placed in each of the six
toteplacepot races (normally the first six races on the
card). You can choose more than one horse in any of the
races to increase your chances of winning. Use a
toteplacepot play slip to place your bet.
Minimum total spend £2.

Another popular bet – especially if you’ve missed the
start of the toteplacepot or it has fallen by the wayside
before the 3rd race. As before, just pick a horse to be
placed in each of the four totequadpot races which are
normally races 3, 4, 5 and 6. Use a totequadpot play slip to
place your bet.
Minimum total spend £1.
Pick the winners of the six totejackpot races at the
nominated totejackpot meeting each day. Not easy – but the
potential rewards are huge! You can choose more than one
horse in any of the races to increase your chances of
winning. Use a toteplacepot play slip to place your bet.
Minimum total spend £2.
Pick at least one horse in the six nominated televised races
each Saturday. Get all six winners to scoop a potentially
massive dividend AND qualify for a big money bonus. Even
finding a placed horse in every race pays an average
dividend of over £500 to a £1 stake. Use a totescoop6 play
slip to place your bet.
Minimum spend £2 per line.
